Our customers have shared with us their experiences with the Salers and Optimizer cattle they have purchased from us over the years and we thought you would enjoy hearing from them:
From Wyoming...
Joe Thomas, Turnell Cattle Company, Meeteetse, Wyoming, loves the bulls he has gotten the last couple years from us. A stand-out bull we sold at Midland Bull Test, who is also a full sib to the 2019 National Western High Selling $10,000 Heifer that was a feature heifer in our Pen of Heifers (pictured in Recent News), is just one of the tremendous bulls he has purchased. Joe reports, “We just sold the heaviest calves off the place since we moved off the Pitchfork 11 years ago and began running cows at this location and we have one of the most outstanding set of heifers we have ever raised."
Joe’s cattle made some impressive results on the rail recently. The heifers graded 97% Choice and Prime with 70% Yield Grade 1’s and 2’s. The fertility has just been outstanding. Of the 547 cows, they had a 94% weaning rate in 2019. “I couldn’t be happier, the bulls I used on the heifers worked fantastic. They just shot them out at calving time and our disposition has been terrific.”
More from Meeteetse...
The Pitchfork Ranch, Meeteetse, Wyoming, began buying Optimizer bulls from us exclusively in 2007. During this time, they have consistently seen a 97% breed up on heifers and a 98% calving percentage in the cow herd. The ranch manager says, "it has just always been this way with these cattle. The fertility is second to none." In 2013, they weaned the heaviest set of calves in the ranch’s history. Then in 2014, they weaned an even heavier set of calves (they now have a different calving season from what they have had historically). High altitude conditions have never affected the Optimizer bulls from us or the cow herd. The ranch runs at over 10,000 feet on their Forest Service permit.
From Montana and Wyoming...
Sunlight Ranch had purchased Optimizer and South Devon bulls from us for use at their Twin Creek unit over the years. Then the unit manager at Bear Creek incorporated Salers and Optimizer bulls and then the resulting females (Optimizer) from their Angus-based cow herd were retained as replacements. They saw anywhere from a 7-9% advantage in breed-up, depending on the year, from what they had been getting. Better yet, the 425 head of Sunlight Ranch Yearling All Natural Steers topped the Market for the Summertime Classic Northern Video Sale in 2015. They topped the market on price per pound and total dollars per head for yearling steers. At that time their cattle summered on range that is split by the Beartooth Highway going over Beartooth Pass (elevation 10,947 feet at the summit). The feet problems were basically eliminated when they began using Salers and Optimizer bulls and they just love calving these Optimizer females. The unit manager said, "These cattle are doing everything we could ask for. We used to have to push the cattle up off the riparian areas every day and they would come back down and over use those areas. The Salers female changed all that. They graze the entire pasture and don't hang out on the low lying areas. Those Salers calves are born easy and are up nursing right away and they go right with their mother when we pair out of the calving area. They handle the altitude and the range utilization is fantastic. We had never kept replacements from our heifers' calves, but these are not throw-away cattle. The calves from the first-calf Optimizer females are just too good not to keep. I just can't say enough good things about them. The numbers are there and the numbers prove how much they can contribute to your profit." They continue to enjoy a 7-9% breed-up advantage with the Salers/Angus Optimizer female in their cow herd and in 2019, the unit manager added Optimizer bulls into their bull battery at one of their additional units. They report the females they are putting back into the cow herd are just getting better and better. Their fertility continues to be in the mid-90’s on breed-up.
